Our Infinity email service was recently upgraded to include new features and functions to provide more flexibility and efficiency to the global Infinity community.

 

The email service is available on all Infinity types and one of the advantages it offers is that you can use any email client (Outlook, Thunderbird etc.) for end users onboard, avoiding the installation, support and maintenance of specialized maritime email software.

Infinity Mail users can now take advantage of the ActiveSync submodule which has been pushed out to all Infinity units free of charge. The ActiveSync module allows active sync capable devices such as iphones, ipads and android devices to be registered to the Infinity Mail server on board vessels. This in turn provides additional functionality such as calendar, contacts and task sharing, in exactly the same manner as the functionality provided by Microsoft Outlook.

The Maritime satellite communications provider Navarino and digital navigation specialist C-Map have jointly created a platform for delivering electronic chart data to ships. This is the first step in a long-term collaboration, which is focused on strengthening digital navigation and operations offerings over L-band and VSAT satellite connections. This will involve updates for electronic navigational charts (ENCs) from C-Map being delivered to ships through Navarino’s Infinity platform.

We have held events in Oslo, Rotterdam and Hamburg, and each provided the opportunity for customers to come witness live demonstrations, learn about the latest developments and see the features of Infinity using real data. Inmarsat also participated in our events to present an update on the new Fleet Xpress service.

The Navarino Infinity department has added a useful Help function to the Infinity portal. Now, whenever customers need help or instructions in using the features of Infinity they can click on the Help icon (see picture) and will be taken to the help page for whichever feature they are using automatically. This Help section also contains full documentation and instructions on how to setup, configure and utilize all the rich features of the Infinity service. It is also a fully searchable database, allowing users to quickly find exactly the instructions they are looking for.

We were very pleased to host Mr Ken Gregers Larsen, of Maersk Tankers, at both the Digital Ship Athens and Digital Ship Singapore conferences. Mr. Larsen’s presentation, entitled ‘Enhancing Satellite Communications for Crew and Business’ was a case study on how Maersk Tankers is using Infinity, and highlighted the features the company finds most useful, among them the file synchronization, global address book replication and the automatic crew account creation function.

This quarter we are pleased to present an interview with Mr. George Pitaoulis, Crewing Manager at ABC Maritime. ABC Maritime AG is a Swiss based, family owned ship-management company, enjoying a long tradition of providing high quality technical management thanks to a technical team of ex seagoing engineers and deck officers. Today the company manages in excess of 30 vessels, comprising a mix of tankers, bulkers and offshore. The company has installed a mix of the FleetBroadband GB plans and XpressLink, combined with Infinity, to both provide their crew with high speed internet as part of their Crew Welfare and enhance the quality of business communications between their offices and shore.

Navarino is pleased to announce support for IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) for its Infinity solution. IPv6 support will be automatically pushed to all Infinity units worldwide in the form of a free update. Besides an increased number of IP addresses, IPv6 has a number of other advantages over IPv4, including more efficient routing and packet processing, directed data flows, simplified network configuration and increased security.

As of the 1st of February 2015,  the default HW configuration of Infinity Cube and Infinity Plus rack mounted version will change to include four (4 )x HDD Disk 1TB Near Line SAS instead of three (3) as it was previously configured.  Four is the maximum capacity for the number of discs per node and it secures better performance and standardization of the Infinity Cube/ Plus production.

Navarino’s newly launched Infinity Cube has been installed on its first vessel, the MT Kinaros of Eletson. The company of 31 vessels has put a FleetBroadband 500 and FleetBroadband 250 on almost every ship, and most of these are using Infinity to share a 6 GB SCAP plan with its crew members. Through wifi areas on the accommodation decks, the crew are able to get online using their own devices.

Navarino has announced the commercial launch of its latest Infinity product, the Infinity Cube. Building upon the success of Infinity among merchant vessels, the Cube enables all Infinity features and more, as an upgraded version of the service. It provides high availability, and a performance virtualization environment, available to end users for hosting virtual machines of any operating system (e.g. Windows, Windows server, Linux distribution etc.) and then for installing applications such as Planned Maintenance Systems, Quality Management Systems, email systems, files servers and any other specialized software used onboard. As is the case with all Infinity functions, the virtualization platform and the virtual machines hosted therein are managed via the unique centralized management and administration Infinity console, the Infinity Hub.

INFINITY Cube is the latest addition to the Navarino product portfolio, scheduled to be commercially launched in September 2014.

 

INFINITY Cube consists of two nodes (rack mounted servers), configured to operate in an active – active cluster mode, offering a high availability virtualization platform. INFINITY Cube will also include a number or peripherals and accessories (racks, switches, ups etc.) as part of a complete IT solution for vessels. The new system is providing all existing INFINITY functionality and in addition gives the ability to our customers to install in it virtual machines and applications.

Norstar was founded in 1998 in London initially as a ship brokerage firm. Norstar Shipping (Asia) Pte Ltd was formed in Singapore in 2005 which is now the Company headquarters covering all areas of Commercial and Technical management. In 2009 technical ship management was brought ‘in-house’ and in 2010 Norstar Ship Management was formed with the merger of Ship Management Associates and Luna, Norstar’s in-house technical team. Norstar’s expertise is in the tanker sector, with 15 ships in management currently and a strong newbuild program in progress, with 6 more ships coming in the near future.

Athens based Atlas Maritime operate 6 vessels. They have recently installed the first infinity unit on the Atlas Voyager, with Fleet Broadband 250 on the 6 GB plan. Previously the vessel was using the Fleet Broadband only for business communications, on the 200 MB plan, but recently the company has decided to start offering its crews options for internet access and Infinity was the route chosen. Atlas has installed Infinity with 2 wifi access points through which the crew of the Atlas Voyager are able to connect to the internet using their own laptops, phones and tablets.

Efshipping have just recently completed upgrading their vessels with Infinity. The company has a total of 7 vessels and a mix of solutions across the fleet. On 3 ships they are using the previously available Inmarsat 3 GB plan that includes voice minutes, over JRC FleetBroadband 500 terminals, with both data and voice shared with crews using Infinity PINs of 25 and 50 MBs over wifi.

This quarter sees the release of the new ship to ship VOIP service from Infinity. By putting an Infinity unit on each vessel, both ships can communicate between themselves using the data channel of their satellite communication channel to make VOIP calls at very low cost. This applies to unlimited number of ships and can be put across a whole fleet for low cost ship to ship calling.

INFINITY has launched a new Voice over IP service that is specifically developed to connect vessels using  INFINITY with the office at a minimal cost, or under some conditions at no cost at all.

The VoIP service allows ship operators to use the office switchboard to call any vessel as if it was a regular extension in the office. Also, vessels can call the office the same way, without dialing any country prefix, directly to the extension of the person in the office they wish to contact.  Therefore, shore to ship telephone cost is minimized and becomes part of your monthly FleetBroadband usage allowance.

Navarino has announced it has completed 300 INFINITY unit installations, within the twelve-month period following INFINITY’s official launch. We have a total order-book of another 200 units already confirmed for installation within the next 12-month period.  Based on the sales trend, it is expected that Navarino will have 750 live INFINITY installations by the End of 2012.


INFINITY is one of the fastest growing services in the company’s history and this growth covers most of the major European and Asian shipping markets, while at the same time both resellers and installers networks are being developed.

Inmarsat has announced that as from the 1st of May 2012, the minimum duration of the Entry 200 MB plan is reduced to 12 months, instead of the 24-month minimum contract duration that applied till the end of April.


Taking into consideration the recently announced pricing changes to the FB Standard Plan, this change makes it more attractive for customers to move from the Standard Plan to the 200MB plan.

A great feature that significantly differentiates INFINITY from its competition is "Light Surfing on Demand". Crewmembers have the option to start light web browsing (meaning that they visit the light or mobile version of websites), by simply clicking the "Light surfing on Demand" icon on the welcome screen of INFINITY. Having measured mobile web performance across a wide range of devices, browsers, networks, and sites, it turns out that a mobile webpage load consumes approximately 0.01 MBytes.

Our INFINITY team  is pleased to announce that the “SOAP & XML” feature is now available to all INFINITY users.


S.O.A.P. (Simple Object Access Protocol) allows any web enabled system of a company to exchange structured information with a vessel (via INFINITY).  Due to the nature of this protocol and its language, SOAP is totally independent and secures compatibility with any programming model.

Inmarsat has launched free shore-to-ship priority voice calling for rescue co-ordination centers (RCC) over its FleetBroadband and existing and evolved services, including Inmarsat B, Fleet F77/55/33 and Mini M.


The service allows a maritime RCC to place a priority voice call to any ship equipped with Inmarsat equipment, with the space segment of the call being free of charge.
